Session 5B - Emergent Literacy Instruction for Students with Complex Needs

Session Description:
This session will introduce special educators to the concept of comprehensive literacy instruction for learners who qualify to take the PASA. Evidence-based practices for building reading and writing skills in students with significant learning challenges will be covered. The content of this session is based on the work of Karen Erickson at the University of North Carolina and was created collaboratively through Allegheny IU3, Beaver Valley IU27, Riverview IU6, and PaTTAN Pittsburgh.
Speaker bios:
Deena Croyle is a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist and is currently working as an educational consultant, providing training and consultation services at Riverview Intermediate Unit #6. Deena’s specialty areas are in the field of Assistive Technology, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), Literacy, and Autism. Deena has experience working with students with complex needs, and is also a local Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) 3rd Edition facilitator.
Kendra Bittner is a Training and Consultation Coordinator for the Allegheny Intermediate Unit. She provides technical assistance and professional development in interpretation, implementation, and presentation of all phases of IDEA. Kendra’s primary area of focus is assistive technology along with supporting students who have complex needs, inclusive practices, and writing.
