Professional Learning Pathways

K-8 Pathway

The K-8 PAsmart Targeted Grant cohort includes six days of facilitated, in-person professional learning as well as twelve hours of embedded online learning. Participants will set individual and school/district goals for expanding computer science access for students. Over the course of the cohort, participants are expected to develop and share artifacts (via Schoology online platform) to demonstrate progress towards their goals.
Participants will define and identify common non-examples of computer science. Drawing on discussion about the importance of computer science education, including current national and state data, PDE goals and timelines, and issues around equity, participants will develop talking points to use with stakeholder groups in their community.  Participants will also examine the CSTA standards and a model curriculum for integrating computer science in K-8, as well as grade-level appropriate computer science tools and platforms (i.e. Scratch, Makey Makey), as identified in an open-source toolkit.  

Grand Scale Objectives:
- Access and use the K-12 Framework and CSTA Standards
- Articulate the need for CS in education and communities
- Initiate and reflect on small-scale implementation pilot
- Recognize and create a plan to close equity gaps, specifically for students with disabilities and other historically underrepresented populations such as students of color and female students
- Leverage community and stakeholder partnerships, including the intermediate units


7-12 Pathways

As part of the PAsmart Targeted Grant Initiative, the PAsmart Design Team also developed the other pathway for 7-12 educators. This model includes two pathways: Pathway A (Bootcamp Model), and Pathway B (Regional Approach). 

Pathway A.
This training involves educators in an intensive learning experience which will be used to build the capacity of school districts and other educational agencies to deliver computer science (CS) to middle and high school students. Participants have the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skillset so they can support and provide students with computer science experiences in classrooms throughout the commonwealth.

Goals for this Pathway:
- Demonstrate subject-matter knowledge as evidenced by passing PA’s CS certification exam
- Analyze and deconstruct the CSTA 2017 standards and CS Framework
- Identify, align, and integrate high quality resources to teach a CS course
- Plan, create, teach and reflect on CSTA/CS Framework aligned CS lessons delivered in grades 7-12

Pathway B.
PAsmart is collaborating with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and Allegheny Intermediate Unit 3 (AIU3) to offer a professional learning experience geared towards middle and high school educators (Pathway B). Pathway B will be leveraging the CMU Academy’s CS Academy and the expertise from the IUs and resources from Carnegie Mellon University to support each educators journey through the experience. 

As a result of the collaboration with CMU and AIU3, the Pathway B model will be offered in a more regional approach at many of the local intermediate units. For details on the training dates reach out to the nearest collaborating Intermediate Unit.
