This session explores how professionals can support families in creating rich, accessible language environments—whether through visual, auditory, or multimodal pathways. Participants will examine advanced considerations related to early hearing technology, visual language acquisition, and the impact of linguistic accessibility on cognitive and social-emotional development. The training highlights interdisciplinary collaboration and the critical role of professionals in ensuring families receive balanced, evidence-informed guidance. Through case examples and practical strategies, attendees will strengthen their ability to coach families, promote meaningful communication interactions, and empower caregivers to make informed, values-aligned language decisions.
Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Recognize the importance of early identification of hearing differences and it's impact on language development.
- Identify early technology options (e.g., hearing aids, cochlear implants) and how they support access to sound and language.
- Describe visual language strategies that promote rich communication environments, including sign language and visual cues.
- Identify key factors to consider when making language choices, including family goals, communication styles, and accessibility.
