This workshop will give an overview of language deprivation research, deaf public health, research with cochlear implants and signing, and discuss interpreting for K-12 deaf students.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the neurocritical period of language acquisition
  • Describe general education and health outcomes currently seen in deaf children and adults
  • Discuss the role of sign language in development of deaf children and cochlear implant outcomes

Target Audience

Educational Interpreters and Teachers of the Deaf working in Pennsylvania Schools. Educational Sign Language Interpreters and Interveners who provide interpreting services in Pennsylvania K-12 classrooms, Teachers of Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing who have at least intermediate American Sign Language Skills.

Topics Covered: Deaf – Hard of Hearing
