In this professional development workshop, participants take a deep dive into the realm of morphology as it pertains to vocabulary development as well as reading/spelling skills. First, they learn and practice with the vocabulary of morphology. They explore key constructions to be found in words coming from each major language of origin and how and why that might prove useful for students who are developing vocabulary, reading, and spelling skills. They learn morphology-based word attack skills and have multiple opportunities to apply them to authentic word analysis. They spend significant time on Latin-based and Greek-based words common in middle school texts. They examine components of effective morphology instruction, practice with effective activities to aid in morphological understanding, and discuss how best to integrate instruction with other content material. They practice with each component and leave with a deeper understanding of how the language works and how to share that knowledge with their students the very next day.
