Partnering for Access: Using Interpreting to Support ELs with Disabilities in Special Education

This session equips administrators and educators with the knowledge and tools to collaborate effectively with interpreters and families of English Learners (ELs) during the special education process. Participants will learn how to ensure accessibility and equity throughout pre-referral, referral, and IEP development. The training will also address how to work with interpreters in a way that upholds ethical standards and supports meaningful family engagement. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the interpreter’s role and fostering culturally responsive communication.
Objectives
Administrators, teachers, ELD Specialists, ELD coordinators, Special Education Directors, Educational Specialists, Interpreters, Cultural Liaisons, School Psych, Educational professionals engaged in the IEP process, Multilingual individuals engaged in the Special education Setting K-12
Target Audience
Participants will be able to:
- Build Foundational Knowledge of Policy and Guidance for English Learners in Special Education.
- Apply Effective and Responsive Interpretation Practices in the IEP Process.
- Strengthen your LEAs Ethical and Professional Practices in Special Education Interpreting.
- Collaborate with educators and interpreters to maintain professional best practices and support accurate communication.
