Foundations of Reading: Phonemic Awareness to Advanced Levels- Train-the-Trainer

This training focuses on research evidence related to phonemic awareness to advanced levels for primary students in grades Kindergarten through Second Grade. This train-the-trainer session will help Intermediate Unit Technical Assistance Consultants (TAC) and School District personnel to successfully train educators to implement direct, explicit, and systematic phonemic awareness instruction into daily classroom practice. Specifically, instructional practices shared will support students’ consistent engagement with manipulating sounds at the word, syllable, onset-rime, and phoneme level. Assessments related to phonemic awareness will also be offered. All training materials and related resources will be provided.
Participants will be able to:
- List the essential phonological and phonemic awareness components that should be included in daily instruction
- Demonstrate the use of multisensory practices aligned to phonemic awareness instruction by engaging in hand motions aligned to specific Phonemic Awareness skills
- Demonstrate mastery of the consonant speech sounds of the English language by articulation of speech sounds
- Demonstrate mastery of the vowel speech sounds of the English language by articulation of speech sounds
- List the components of a multisensory lesson
- List the non-negotiables for teaching a phonemic awareness lesson
