It is essential that all students, especially English learners participate in instructional activities that engage them in quality interactions, which are intentionally structured to support their conceptual, analytic, and linguistic development. Ultimately, these interactions promote their ability to apply these skills and practices independently in new learning situations. By creating classroom environments and activities with ample opportunities for purposeful student collaboration and discussion, teachers can capitalize on the ways English learners naturally learn from one another (Billings and Muller, 2016).

This professional development opportunity will focus on evidence-based practices to foster quality student interactions including open-ended questions, disciplinary practices, and focus on key ideas.

Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. Define the role of social interaction in language acquisition and literacy development.
  2. List what constitutes “Quality Student Interaction."
  3. Describe high-quality student interactions to engage ELs in academic conversations around big ideas across the curriculum.
