Pennsylvania's Standards-Aligned System, often referred to as SAS, offers a common framework design for continuous school and district improvement to be utilized across all levels: school building, district, Intermediate Unit ( IU), and state. The system also supports differentiation depending upon whether a school/district requires improvement or enhancement. This common set of "organizers" ensures state-wide consistency and coherence in the design of programs, tools, technical assistance, and targeted supports. Below is a graphical representation of the six components and four "lenses."
The first element defines the SIX corollary segments of Pennsylvania's Standards-Aligned System. The second element identifies the FOUR "lenses" through which to view the standards-based system. Both elements must be considered when planning.
See PDE's Educational Hub website for detailed information related the the six corollary segments and associated web links.
SAS Math
Currently, the Standards-Aligned system in Mathematics (SAS Math) is the only content area that is available to educators. Math resources to support all six segments of SAS are in development. As they are completed, they will be available on the Education Hub SAS Math page linked to its correlating segment of the circle.
PA Big Ideas in Mathematics
Pennsylvania's Big Ideas in Mathematics, grades K-Pre-Calculus, are now available for viewing/download. The intention of PA's Big Ideas in Math is to assist educators in the identification of critical concepts to be taught to mastery across grade levels/courses. Pennsylvania's Big Ideas in Mathematics is written, in part, as a response to the analysis in the TIMSS Study which reports that a typical United States mathematics curriculum is "a mile wide and an inch deep", teaching too many topics and none to complete understanding. Pennsylvania's Big Ideas in Math are meant to encompass the most essential concepts and skills addressed in Pennsylvania's Mathematics Standards. These are the "Big Ideas" that are critical to success in mathematics for all students. The SAS Math framework supports the consistent application of Big Ideas in Mathematics to identify connections between mathematical concepts.
Standards-Aligned Systems across other content areas will also be available by summer, 2008 for the following; Reading/Writing/Listening/Speaking, Civics, Science and Health and Physical Education.
