Curriculum

School leaders, in partnership with parents, teachers, and the entire school community, are responsible for ensuring that every student is engaged in a challenging and rigorous curriculum. Leaders face the challenges to align curriculum with standards and to ensure that all students have access to and are participating in the curriculum. Services are available to assist school leaders in meeting these challenges. In addition, special education leaders are responsible for augmenting the core curriculum with supplemental and intervention materials, when appropriate, to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities.

The general education curriculum drives the educational program that is individualized for students with disabilities. With a range of learning accommodations most students with disabilities have success in learning the same content as non-disabled peers. Other students may require some modifications to the curriculum to address their specific needs. The key issue for the educational team is designing an effective program that assists the child to learn and socialize with non-disabled peers to the greatest extent possible.
