Assessment
Assessments are designed to determine the student's abilities and needs in relevant aspects of the curriculum and instruction. Educators need this essential tool to guide daily instruction. The range of assessments may fluctuate from classroom assessment practices all the way to district and statewide assessment programs.
Assessments for students who need speech and language support consist of instructional or curriculum based assessments, and standardized assessments. These assessments are conducted to screen students for possible consideration as needing speech and language support, for case load selection, and for progress monitoring. Effective practice indicates that each type of assessment should be included in the assessment process, and that the assessment should lead directly to instruction.
Specific instructional areas of need are identified during the assessment process and are individualized for each student. Specific guidelines and rules for selection and non-selection of students issued by the state or by school districts or intermediate units are not advised.
