BrainSTEPS Fall 2017 Brain Injury School Consulting Team Leader Workshop

  • Brenda Eagan Brown, M.Ed., CBIS is the statewide Program Coordinator for Pennsylvania’s Brain Injury School Re-Entry Consulting Program called BrainSTEPS which was recently recognized by the CDC as a national model. She received her Master’s Degree in the educational aspects of pediatric traumatic brain injury from The George Washington University, where she now serves as an adjunct professor in the graduate school. She is currently enrolled in a doctoral program at Johns Hopkins University. She is published in the field of TBI, regularly presents at the state, national, and international levels. She also has received multiple state and national awards for her work in brain injury. Currently, she serves as an Expert Reviewer for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Report to Congress on Management of Traumatic Brain Injury in Children and has also co-authored a CDC document on return to school. She was chosen as an expert concussion presenter for the Obama appointed Institute of Medicine/National Research Council committee. Spearheading development and creation of PA’s Return to Learn Concussion Team Model, she has trained well over 1,300 school based teams in PA. Brenda is co-leading the first national Concussion Return to Learn Consensus paper for the National Collaborative for Children’s Brain Injury (NCCBI). Most importantly, Brenda has a brother who sustained a severe traumatic brain injury while they were teenagers, which is where her passion for helping families and students began.
  • Kristin James, CBIS, is an Assistive Technology Consultant and BrainSTEPS Team Leader for the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit. Kristin received a Bachelor of Science degree in K-6 and Teacher of Visual Impairments (TVI) at Kutztown University and her Masters of Exceptionalities at Bloomsburg University. Kristin has been a teacher of the Blind and Visually Impaired for 19 years, Training and Consultation (TaC) in Inclusive Practices for one year, and Assistive Technology Consultant and BrainSTEPS Team Leader for the past five years. As of June 2017, Kristin became a newly Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS) through the Academy of Certified Brain Injury Specialists.
  • Bethany Wilson, CCC/SLP is a licensed speech language pathologist, a consultant for the IU6 Training and Consultation (TaC) team, and the team leader for BrainSTEPS for RIU6. Bethany’s areas of concentration include Traumatic Brain Injury and Assistive Technology, especially AAC. Bethany also is an instructor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Clarion University of PA. Most recently, she has taught courses focusing on language disorders and AAC.
