Participants will learn how gaps in vocabulary in middle school students, particularly for English learners and low-income students, interfere with comprehension of content area texts and be introduced to the Word Generation curriculum. Word Generation is a program designed to teach academic vocabulary daily across the core content areas through discussion-based activities. Self-selected middle school teams, represented by ELA, Science, Social Studies and Math Teachers will work collaboratively to implement “Word Generation” to improve the academic language and argumentation skills of their students. Middle school teams will select a grade level who is committed to a year-long focus on fidelity of implementation of Word Generation. Participating teams will also collect evidence of systems, classroom and student growth as a function of participation in this series.

Objectives

Participants will:

  1. List ways to provide students with repeated exposure to high-frequency academic words across disciplines
  2. Implement an evidence-based tool (word generation) to support all content area teachers with delivery of effective vocabulary instruction
  3. Define high-quality, multidimensional academic vocabulary instruction
  4. Collect, record, and analyze data to inform implementation refinement toward improved student outcomes
