This training is an exciting opportunity to learn about the valuable experience the Summer Academy (SA) and the STEM Extension program provides to High School students who are blind or visual impaired. During the week, Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI) and Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialists (COMS) will observe various content areas, learn new adaptive strategies, and assist with group instruction. In addition, TVi & COMS will join other educational professionals to expand their knowledge in Assistive Technology, Daily Living Skills, and STEM during specific targeted, hands-on training´s. (Each week’s training will correspond with the Summer Academy Schedule.
Objectives
Participants will:
- List three assistive technology (AT) devices and/or apps that can be utilized by students with visual impairments
- Demonstrate the ability to access the accessibility features on a computer and/or iOS device
- Demonstrate two adaptive techniques in the area of vision rehabilitation therapy adaptive daily living skills
- List two adaptive techniques and or tools that could be utilized for labeling or object identification
Target Audience
Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments Orientation and Mobility Specialists
Individuals attending this course must arrive on time and stay the duration of the course in order to receive Act 48 Professional Education hours. Requests for exceptions are to be brought to the attention of the individual´s Superintendent or IU Director prior to the course.

The Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services will provide lodging and meals; and reimbursement for travel to and from the event. Directions for submitting receipts will be included in your packet upon arrival at Summer Academy.
