High Impact Family Engagement Strategies to Close Achievement Gaps

A study of Chicago´s most improved schools revealed that schools with strong school-family-community partnerships are four times more likely to improve in reading and ten times more likely to improve in math as compared to schools with weak school-family-community partnerships (Bryk, Sebring, et al., 2010). How can districts and schools integrate high impact family engagement strategies into their practice to improve achievement? This session will take a look at the roles of district leaders, school administrators and Title I specialists, classroom teachers, and other school staff in developing family engagement plans tied to school priorities and learning. These roles will be defined by the U.S. Department of Education´s Dual Capacity Building Framework for Family-School Partnerships as well as culturally responsive best practices to engage culturally, linguistically, and economically diverse families in their children´s education. Participants will walk away with practical tools and strategies to strengthen school-family-community partnerships to increase achievement.
