Session 51 Boost Beginning Reading with a Phonics Plus Approach to Word Study

The CCSS expect children in First Grade to “Read base words with inflectional endings and to use knowledge of the meaning of base words to identify and read common compound words (e.g., football, popcorn, day dream). Second graders are expected to “Read words with common prefixes (e.g., un-, dis-) and suffixes (e.g., -ly, -less, -ful). How? We will learn ways to address these objectives, teaching word families that include inflections, compounds, and some transparent derivations. (Research, theory, and strategies, with group participation)
