The State Performance Plan provides a framework for continuous improvement for students with disabilities. A new requirement called the State Systemic Improvement Plan (Indicator 17) focuses on improving graduation rates for students with disabilities. During this session, the presenters will review Pennsylvania’s plan and discuss the research-based strategies the state will implement to help students stay in school and graduate.

Much attention is being given to planning, writing and revising long narrative, informative, and argumentative products. However, perhaps even more gains in writing will flow from a focus on writing for learning: completing short writing assignments often in all classes. In this session, Dr. Archer will present procedures to scaffold writing summaries, compare-contrast paragraphs, and responses to reading (explanations, opinions, etc.) using strategies, writing frames, and think sheets.

This session will build participants background knowledge and skills to utilize the CDT to maximize student learning. Participants will gain knowledge and facility with CDT interactive maps, learning progression maps, and student and teacher data analysis templates. The presenters will focus on the rational for taking the CDT from the viewpoint of students and teachers. Support materials to engage in one-on-one conferencing and goal setting with students using CDT results will also be offered.

Pennsylvania Safe Schools- Healthy Students Partnership (SS-HS) is a multi-year pilot project in which three Local Education Agencies are collaborating with Mental Health, Juvenile Justice and Child Welfare at the county-level to install evidence-based promotion, prevention and interventions through a multi-tiered system of support for the benefit of all students, including those with behavioral health needs. A requirement of the SS-HS pilot sites is the establishment of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the local project partners. This session will address how the cross-systems project partners are coalescing as local management teams and are framing MOUs that define how they are jointly conducting environmental scans and needs assessments to inform a comprehensive plan for their communities and schools.

18. Keys To Family Engagement

During this session, presenters will share their school’s practices to enhance and maintain parent engagement through the Family Resource Center. Self-assessment opportunities will be included in this session and resources will be shared that schools can use to scale up their efforts to reach out to families in a positive way. Presenters will highlight universal screening practices, staff acknowledgement ideas, events and outreach activities, and the Positive Family Check-Up process. Check-in/Check-out is discussed in the context of creating parent partnerships to enhance student social behavioral development within a framework supported through school-based counseling and student assistance program personnel.
