MTSS Bootcamp: What Do Teams Takeaway?

The MTSS Bootcamps continue to draw attention and attendance across the state and across the grade levels. For this school year, the Bootcamps are now separated into two distinct trainings: Elementary Interdisciplinary Teams and Secondary Interdisciplinary Teams. The Elementary version addresses the conceptual and practical underpinnings of school improvement. This is done through the implementation and sustainability of a tiered system promoting the growth and achievement of all students across content areas. The Secondary version has been modified to resemble the work being done with the State Systemic Improvement Plan (SSIP), which is aiming to increase graduation rates and decrease dropout rates for students in Pennsylvania with disabilities. The SSIP Theory of Action is applicable to all schools and within it espouses the role of a multi-tiered system of academic supports and evidence based practices for all students.

The foci of the trainings challenge and empower staff to self-identify their strengths and needs and take an action plan back to their building. Staff have reported the team time to discuss and plan and network with colleagues has broadened their understanding and appreciation and invigorated them to go back to their building with a renewed drive. Scheduling, grade level data meetings, calculating rate of improvement, Chart Dog, understanding the systemic elements within a tiered framework, and having a catalogue of evidence based interventions are repeated takeaways of the Bootcamps.

At a recent Bootcamp, a participant described the building she works in and said “We have a good base with which to build on. We need to look into our core and communicate with all involved teachers.” Another educator noted “We have excellent pieces in place!” and is excited about supporting the continued growth of student achievement in the future. A school that has already been approved to use RtII for SLD Determination has had a change in administration and teaching staff since their approval. This elementary school has identified the need to continue to examine and adapt their framework based on student data and adult need. “We are already approved for SLD but need to refine our approach to reapply.”

From these Bootcamp trainings, schools have invited PaTTAN and/or their Intermediate Unit on-site to talk about MTSS to the larger staff, participate in data meetings, model the use of various interventions across the tiers, and problem solve and refine their day to day core instruction.
