General guidelines to help ELL students study for state assessments

Preparing our students for the state assessments should include introducing them to the assessment formats they will be encountering. This is important in order to increase their confidence in the process. Some simple strategies to do this include:
a) Introducing students to the various formats to which they will be exposed
b) Showing students how to navigate multiple-choice, open-ended, short answer, and extended answer questions
c) Reviewing sample test items and scoring guidelines (available online)
d) Modeling/practicing reading and following directions
e) Discussing question expectations (what does “show” vs “explain” mean?)
f) Answering all the questions, and not rushing through the test
g) Checking answers carefully
